George William Cottrell, Jr. Member Julia Smith's work uses the medieval reception of early Christian martyr traditions to examine the ways in which late antique discourses of gender and sanctity were reinterpreted ca. 400-1100. She will explore the central role of Roman martyrs in the devotional, imaginative, and political life of the Middle Ages.
