Trustee David M. Rubenstein Receives Presidential Medal of Freedom
IAS Trustee David M. Rubenstein has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Joe Biden. This prestigious honor, the nation's highest civilian award, is "presented to individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors." In particular, Rubenstein was recognized "for his philanthropy and generous support for the restoration of historic landmarks and the country’s cultural institutions."
Rubenstein, who has served on the Institute's Board of Trustees since 2005, has made a transformative impact on the Institute campus. Through a visionary gift, he enabled the creation of Rubenstein Commons, a 17,175-square-foot building that serves as a hub for the IAS community. The Commons, which officially opened its doors in 2022, provides flexible gathering spaces that enhance communication and collaboration among scholars, enriching the academic ecosystem of the Institute.
Alongside eighteen other notable recipients, Rubenstein officially received the Medal of Freedom in a ceremony held on January 4, 2025.
