
Past IAS Director Robbert Dijkgraaf Appointed President-Elect of the International Science Council
Robbert Dijkgraaf, IAS Director and Leon Levy Professor (2012–22), has been appointed as President-Elect of the International Science Council (ISC), following his election to the ISC Governing Board in December 2024. During his term in office, Dijkgraaf will play a vital role in the organization’s development and the fulfillment of their newly adopted Strategic Plan. While leading these efforts, Dijkgraaf will strengthen the ISC’s mission to address the most pressing challenges facing science and society today.
Prior to his appointment as President-Elect, Dijkgraaf served the Netherlands as Minister of Education, Culture and Science from 2022–24. In his scientific research, Dijkgraaf has also made significant contributions to the understanding of string theory and black holes. Across multiple appointments and leadership roles, including the IAS Directorship, Dijkgraaf has been a steadfast advocate and champion for science education.

Dijkgraaf will officially succeed Gluckman as President of the ISC in October 2026.
The International Science Council serves as one of the world’s foremost organizations representing the scientific community. The council works globally to catalyze and convene scientific expertise, and advise on and influence issues of major concern to both science and society. Through a global membership of 250 scientific institutions, unions, and associations, the ISC disseminates scientific knowledge, promotes the continued support of research, and encourages meaningful action for all stakeholders in the advancement of science as a public good.
