Kirk Varnedoe was the fourth art historian to be appointed Professor in the Institute for Advanced Study’s School of Historical Studies. Prior to his appointment to the Institute for Advanced Study in January 2002, Varnedoe served for thirteen years as Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art and, prior to his museum career, he taught art history at Stanford, Columbia, and New York Universities.
