Archaeologist Hetty Goldman was the first woman to join the Faculty of the Institute for Advanced Study, and she was among the founding Professors of the School of Humanistic Studies, which later became the School of Historical Studies.
Goldman’s pioneering work in field archaeology, though frequently interrupted by the political turmoil of the early twentieth century, formed the basis of subsequent studies of cross-cultural interaction in Greece and the Near East. It also set a high benchmark for eloquent interpretation of archaeological evidence.
