Hermann Weyl, who served on the Institute Faculty in the School of Mathematics from 1933 until his death in 1955, was one of the preeminent mathematicians of the first half of the twentieth century. His expertise was broad, and his work spanned many areas, including topology, differential geometry, Lie groups, representation theory, quantum mechanics, harmonic analysis, and analytic number theory. He made a major impact on the progress of the entire field of mathematics, and among those mathematical topics named for him are Weyl algebra, the Weyl character formula, the Weyl tensor, the Weyl group, and many more.
