Maggie Hennefeld is writing a book about the history of women who allegedly died from laughing too hard, considered alongside gendered theories of clinical hysteria. She explores the etymology of "hysterical laughter" -- as both jubilant pleasure and pathological symptom -- through archives and theories of mass media culture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
