Suzannah Clark is tracing the history of the concepts of “key” and “modulation” in music treatises from Rameau to Schenker (1722–1935). While the understanding of “key” is relatively straightforward, the term “modulation” is far less stable. The aim is to show how these foundational concepts shaped perceptions of harmony and to recapture historical ways of hearing music.
