Exploring Tidal Effects: A New Perspective From Effective Field Theory

Tidal effects serve as a useful tool to study compact objects. In this talk, I will present how the worldline effective field theory (EFT) can be applied to examine the tidal responses of compact objects. This approach offers a robust framework for parameterizing both conservative and dissipative tidal effects, enabling the first bound of dissipation numbers from the current Gravitational-wave Transient Catalog (GWTC). When applying the EFT in the fully dynamical regime, I will show how the EFT can help study the stellar tidal disruption events, especially in identifying the corrections from relativity and stellar oscillations.
