LAB DOG: What Global Science Owes American Beagles
How did dogs become scientific beings? Although it is now widely understood that a Border Collie or a Golden Retriever is a cognitively complex creature meriting advanced nutrition and monthly pharmaceuticals, this way of thinking about dogs was the result of over a century of fascinating and controversial experiments. Tracing how researchers in a variety of fields came to believe that beagles were the ideal “laboratory dog,” this talk will show how scientists have utilized and reimagined the human-canine bond for the production of knowledge.
