Sarah E. Fraser explores transformative changes to Chinese painting through the collaborations of Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) and Tibetan artists. In her book-length study Fraser examines Zhang's ethnographic impulse and his efforts to invent modern, purely 'Chinese' form of expression through copies of Buddhist murals on the frontier.
