I will examine the effects of the fourteenth-century Black Death on gender systems in England. Some scholars have asserted that women experienced a 'Golden Age' after the plague, while others have demurred. I hope to assess both the resilience and the vulnerability of gender when faced with large-scale demographic crisis.
