Noga Alon Awarded 2022 Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences
Frequent Visiting Professor Noga Alon has won the 2022 Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences for his contributions to discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science. The prize has been compared to the Nobel and carries with it a monetary award of $1,200,000.
During his last stay at the Institute in 2015, Alon was working on problems in extremal and probabilistic combinatorics, information theory, combinatorial number theory, and discrete probability, with the plan to combine combinatorial tools with algebraic and probabilistic techniques.
He is cited by the prize committee for contributions including pioneering the area of data stream analysis, connecting the combinatorial and algebraic properties of expander graphs, and for co-authoring the essential basic manual on probability and combinatorics.
The Shaw Prize is an international award to honor individuals who have achieved distinguished and significant advances in their fields, who have made outstanding contributions in academic and scientific research or applications, or who in other domains have achieved excellence.
Alon shares the award with Ehud Hrushovski, Merton Professor of Mathematical Logic, Oxford University. The Shaw Prize, established under the auspices of Mr. Run Run Shaw in November 2002, is managed and administered by The Shaw Prize Foundation based in Hong Kong.
