Applying for the J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa

When to Apply

Applicants may apply for their visa as soon as they are prepared to do so. Exchange Visitor visa applicants are encouraged to apply for their visa early to provide ample time for visa processing.

Where to Apply

Visa applicants should generally apply at a US Embassy or Consulate with jurisdiction over their place of permanent residence. Although visa applicants may apply at any US Embassy or Consulate abroad, it may be more difficult to qualify for the visa outside the country of permanent residence. Canadian citizens are not required to apply for a visa to enter the United States in J status. Application for J status is made at the port of entry when they enter the United States by showing a Canadian passport, a Form DS-2019, Receipt for payment of the SEVIS fee, Institute invitation letter, and proof of financial support (if not received by the Institute).

How to Apply

The standard procedure for most US Embassies or Consulates is for the visa applicant to make a personal appearance at the US Embassy or Consulate and submit the application to a representative who makes a preliminary review of the papers for completeness. After the papers are reviewed, the applicant will be called to answer some questions regarding the visa application.

Most visa applicants will submit the documentation noted below. Visa application may vary slightly by US Embassy or Consulate, please review the web pages of the location where you will be applying for specific instructions (https://www.usembassy.gov).

  • Certificate of Eligibility (Form DS-2019): For each applicant seeking J-1 or J-2 status regardless of age.
  • Online Non-immigrant Visa Application (Form DS-160): For each applicant seeking J-1 or J-2 status regardless of age. Form must be completed online at https://ceac.state.gov/genniv/.
  • Passport: For each applicant seeking J-1 or J-2 status regardless of age.
  • Photograph: One recent 5cm x 5cm color photo taken against a white background showing the full face from the front view.
  • Institute Invitation Letter
  • Financial Documentation: Evidence showing you can cover the expenses of your visit if you will not receive sufficient funds from the Institute.
  • Visa Application Fee/Receipt of Payment: A non-refundable visa application fee equivalent to $185 (USD) in local currency (subject to change) is required for all visa applicants.
  • SEVIS Fee/Receipt of Payment: A non-refundable SEVIS fee of $220 (USD) is required for J-1 visa applicants. This fee must be paid at least 3 days before a visa interview. Instructions on how to pay the fee can be found at: www.fmjfee.com.

Consular Approval and Visa Issuance

If your request for a visa is approved, it will be printed in your passport and returned to you with your Form DS-2019.
