Hirosi Ooguri Receives Medal of Honor from Emperor of Japan

Hirosi Ooguri, former Visiting Professor (2015) and Member (1988–89) in the School of Natural Sciences, has been awarded a Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon, conferred by Japan's Emperor Naruhito on November 3, 2019.

The Medal of Honor was established in 1881 by Emperor Meiji. Medals with Purple Ribbon are awarded to "individuals who have contributed to academic and artistic developments, improvements, and accomplishments." Ooguri is currently Director of the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe at the University of Tokyo and the Director and Fred Kavli Professor of the Walter Burke Institute for Theoretical Physics at the California Institute of Technology. During the 2014 Prospects in Theoretical Physics program at IAS, Ooguri gave a three-part lecture on "Topological String Theory," and in 2018, Ooguri spoke on "Symmetry in QFT and Gravity" during a workshop on "Quantum Information and the Structure of Spacetime."
