Irving Lavin Named Grand'Ufficiale dell'Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana
Irving Lavin (1927–2019), Professor in the School of Historical Studies for forty-five years, will be named Grand'Ufficiale dell'Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana at a ceremony taking place at the Consulate General of Italy in New York.
The honor, which is conferred by the President of the Italian Republic, recognizes exemplary merit in the cultivation of friendly international ties with Italy and in the promotion of Italian culture abroad.
Lavin’s deep knowledge of Italian art and culture was the result of over fifty years of study, particularly in Rome, where he embraced the city and encouraged Italian art history to move into the world of intellectual creativity.
The Institute for Advanced Study will host a remembrance in honor of Irving Lavin on April 26, 2019. To register, please visit www.ias.edu/events/lavin-remembrance.
