Ayelet Shachar Awarded 2019 Leibniz Prize

Ayelet Shachar, former Member (2000–01) in the School of Social Science, has been awarded a 2019 Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize for her groundbreaking work on citizenship and the legal frameworks of multicultural societies. The 2019 Leibniz Prizes will be presented in Berlin on March 13.

Shachar is Director of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Ethnic and Religious Diversity (MPI-MMG) and was recently elected to serve on the Board of Trustees of the Association of Members of the Institute for Advanced Study, effective January 1, 2019.

Shachar’s current research focuses on the legal and ethical puzzles associated with the surge of “citizenship for sale” programs. Shachar has also dedicated her attention to the social and political implications of “shifting borders.”

Shachar is the author of Multicultural Jurisdictions: Cultural Differences and Women’s Rights (Cambridge University Press, 2001), for which she won the American Political Science Association’s 2002 Foundations of Political Theory Section Best First Book Award. She is also author of The Birthright Lottery: Citizenship and Global Inequality (Harvard University Press, 2009), which was named a 2010 Notable Book by the International Ethics Section of the International Studies Association in recognition of its “superior scholarship and contribution to the field of international ethics.”
