Didier Fassin to Explore the Moral Economy of Resentment in Lecture at Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies

Didier Fassin, James D. Wolfensohn Professor in the School of Social Science, will give a public lecture, "The Moral Economy of Resentment," which will take place at 4:30 p.m. on December 7 in the Louis A. Simpson International Building at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies.

In this public lecture, Fassin will explore resentment as the explanation for various recent political events, from the vote in favor of Brexit to the election of Donald Trump. Its prevalence among categories of population frustrated by social, economic and cultural transformations that leave them on the side of the road would account for the successes of populist politicians and ideas. While this interpretation poses problems since it remains to be supported by more empirical evidence and it tends to justify constituencies attracted by xenophobic and racist discourses, it raises the important issue of the role of this affect in politics.
