Former Member Andrew Wiles Awarded Prestigious Abel Prize

Andrew Wiles, Member in the School of Mathematics on several occasions and also a former Institute Trustee, has been awarded the 2016 Abel Prize for his stunning proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem by way of the modularity conjecture for semistable elliptic curves, opening a new era in number theory. The prize, which is awarded by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, recognizes contributions of extraordinary depth and influence to the mathematical sciences.
