A Conversation with Robbert Dijkgraaf and Edward Witten
On May 29, 2019, the Institute for Advanced Study celebrated the publication of The Universe Speaks in Numbers by frequent Director's Visitor Graham Farmelo, with a public event bringing together world-class science communicators to discuss the close relationship between mathematics and physics.
During the event, Edward Witten, Charles Simonyi Professor in the School of Natural Sciences, joined Director and Leon Levy Professor Robbert Dijkgraaf for a 20-minute discussion on mathematics and physics, including the gap between theory and experimentation in physics, how physics can shed light on surprising connections between distant mathematical fields, and some of the outstanding questions in the fields of quantum gravity, quantum field theory, and number theory.
