On February 22, 2019, Visiting Professor in the School of Mathematics Sanjeev Arora hosted a day of talks titled "Deep Learning: Alchemy or Science?"
Featuring lectures by Arora, Zachary Lipton, Yann LeCun, Joelle Pineau, Shai Shalev-Shwartz, and Michael Collins, along with a concluding panel discussion moderated by Director and Leon Levy Professor Robbert Dijkgraaf, the event focused on the challenges of establishing a theoretical understanding of deep learning. The event was supported by a grant from the Schwab Charitable Fund made possible by the generosity of Eric and Wendy Schmidt. Schmidt, Technical Advisor to Alphabet, has been an IAS Trustee since 2008.
