World Disorder Series: How Leading Powers Can Diverge
How might Germany's economic and geopolitical objectives cause problems for the United States?
In this talk, Emmanuel Todd takes the diverging paths of the United States and Germany (rather than all too obvious Russia) as a case study. Todd discusses how the resistance of German culture to neoliberalism has turned the country, again, into the major European power, which today controls a continent, the industrial power of which is superior to that of the U.S. As Germany pursues independent economic and geopolitical objectives, some of which will lead to major crises, Todd posits that it will be difficult for American leaders to go on denying that they have a problem with their too powerful ally.
