[Leon A.] Henkin, professor emeritus of mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, had labored much of his career to boost the number of women and underrepresented minorities in the upper levels of mathematics. Henkin spearheaded and chaired the Special Scholarships Committee at UC Berkeley, co-founded the Summer Mathematics Program on campus, played a central role in developing the Bay Area Mathematics Project, [and] co-led a 1989 study of math literacy in the U.S. commissioned by the American Association for the Advancement of Science
