Francesca Trivellato Awarded Jacques Barzun Prize for “Promise and Peril”
Francesca Trivellato, Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the School of Historical Studies, has been awarded the 2020 Jacques Barzun Prize in Cultural History for The Promise and Peril of Credit: What a Forgotten Legend about Jews and Finance Tells Us about the Making of European Commercial Society (Princeton University Press, 2019).
Conferred by the American Philosophical Society, the prize is awarded annually to "the author whose book exhibits distinguished work in American or European cultural history."
The Promise and Peril of Credit examines how an antisemitic legend gave voice to widespread fears surrounding the expansion of private credit in Western capitalism. Click here to read an excerpt from the book published in the Institute Letter.
The prize will be presented at the society's April 2021 meeting.
