Institute for Advanced Study Invites Membership Applications for 2025–26 Academic Year

The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), located in Princeton, NJ, is one of the world’s leading centers for foundational research. Founded in 1930, IAS is an independent, private institution that provides its community of scholars with the freedom to pursue intellectual inquiry, free from teaching and other administrative obligations. Each year, scholars from around the world are invited to submit an application to pursue their own research within one of the Institute's four Schools: Historical Studies, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Social Science. The Institute is currently inviting applications for the 2025–26 academic year.

During their appointment, accepted scholars (known as "Members") will receive access to the extensive resources of the Institute, including offices, libraries, and subsidized dining and housing facilities. The types of Membership offered, eligibility requirements, and application processes vary from School to School. Summaries of each School's research activities and links to more detailed application information can be found below.

School of Historical Studies

The School of Historical Studies supports scholarship in all fields of historical research but is concerned principally with the history of western, near eastern and Asian civilizations, with particular emphasis upon the Greek and Roman world, the history of Europe (medieval, early modern, and modern), the Islamic world, East Asian studies, art history, history of science, and musicology.

School of Mathematics

The School of Mathematics invites applications from mathematicians and theoretical computer scientists from all mathematical subject areas and career levels. Memberships are also offered to participants engaged in the annual Special-Year Program. During the 2025–26 academic year, the theme of the Special-Year Program will be Arithmetic Geometry, Hodge Theory, and o-minimality.

The School of Natural Sciences offers Memberships in the areas of theoretical astrophysics, biology, cosmology, mathematical physics, quantum field theory, particle phenomenology, string theory, and quantum gravity.

School of Social Science

The School of Social Science welcomes applications from scholars across a wide range of fields in the social sciences and related disciplines. Approximately half of each year's selected scholars work in the year's designated theme, half on other projects. The theme for the 2025–26 academic year is Digital (In)Equality.

Funding Sources for Memberships

The Institute is proud to be supported by many funding bodies, including but not limited to the following. Submitting an application automatically enters each applicant into consideration for all funding streams for which they are eligible.

  • The Alfred Landecker Foundation supports Alfred Landecker Members within the Schools of Historical Studies and Social Science, working on themes of group hatred, collective capital crimes, digitality, and political order.
  • The Mellon Foundation supports the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellowship for Assistant Professors and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Visiting Professor in the Humanities within the School of Historical Studies. 
  • The Minerva Research Foundation supports Minerva Research Foundation Members within the School of Mathematics.
  • The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation supports a Gladys Krieble Delmas Member within the School of Historical Studies, working on European and/or American history and the letters.
  • The Gerda Henkel Stiftung Foundation supports a Gerda Henkel Stiftung Member in the School of Historical Studies. Applicants who are citizens of European Union countries are eligible for this funding stream.
  • The Fritz Thyssen Foundation supports Fritz Thyssen Members within the Schools of Historical Studies and Social Science.
