Each year, leading scientists and scholars come to the Institute for Advanced Study from around the world to interact, explore, share and discover. A new intellectual mix of researchers and ideas is created, spanning young postdoctoral fellows to distinguished senior professors, across the humanities and sciences. Known as “Members,” these visiting scholars are freed from teaching and administration, and are afforded opportunities for discussion and collaboration across the Institute’s four Schools: Historical Studies, Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Social Science.

The 2016–17 class of Members is a collective of approximately 245 scholars from more than 29 countries and 100 different institutions.

“The Institute is a unique and remarkable environment for concentration, inspiration and ingenuity,” stated Robbert Dijkgraaf, Institute Director and Leon Levy Professor. “Scholars visit the Institute to explore the overarching questions in their fields and we are very excited for this incoming class of Members to offer new insights into these areas.”

The Institute is designed to encourage scholars to take their research to the next level. This includes creating and sustaining an environment where Members live in an academic village of apartments set at the edge of the Institute’s campus. Members eat in the same dining hall, share common rooms and libraries, and carry out their work in an institutional setting where human scale has been carefully maintained to encourage the sharing of ideas, mutual understanding and friendship.
