Soap-Bubble Pioneer Is First Woman to Win Prestigious Maths Prize
Writing for Nature, Davide Castelvecchi reports on the 2019 Abel Prize awarded to Karen Uhlenbeck, current Visitor and former Member and Visiting Professor in the School of Mathematics, writing:
"Uhlenbeck has been a relentless advocate for women in mathematics, and founded the Women and Mathematics programme at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. 'She has been an enormous role model and mentor for many generations of women,' says Caroline Series, a mathematician at the University of Warwick in Coventry UK, and the president of the London Mathematical Society."
