Didier Fassin, James D. Wolfensohn Professor in the School of Social Science, examines the "neoliberal authoritarian program" of French president Emmanuel Macron, whose politics were uniquely characterized as "neither left nor right" throughout his campaign, writing:
"Often regarded, especially outside France, as a bulwark against the rise of extremist tendencies that threaten democracy, Macron is rapidly undermining some of democracy’s crucial components: constitutional checks and balances, public accountability, and vigorous debate in the legislature and the media."
