Emmy Murphy Is a Mathematician Who Finds Beauty in Flexibility

Emmy Murphy is a past Visitor (2021–22) and von Neumann Fellow (2019–20) in the School of Mathematics. 

In this interview, Murphy outlines the beauty she finds in math and the surprising flexibility she's discovered in symplectic geometry, a field that's only "been seriously studied for maybe 35 years." She also describes the inspiration that she draws from her namesake, famous early 20th-century algebraist and past IAS Visitor Emmy Noether.
