How do I use my own desktop or laptop computer at the Institute?

While your IAS office comes equipped with a Red Hat Enterprise Linux computer system already installed and configured to access our network resources, you are welcome to use your own personal desktop or laptop computer in your IAS office.

Let's get started:

1. Register your personal desktop or laptop computer to work on our wired or wireless networks.

The Institute now uses an online network self-registration process.

  • For wired connections - plug an Ethernet cable into your device and an available network jack in your IAS office or apartment in the housing complex and open a web browser. This should result in your device being directed to a registration page with options to register as a guest with access for two weeks, or to log in with your IAS credentials for permanent access. Please do not unplug the network cable connected to the IAS computer in your IAS office. If you need an additional Ethernet cable, please send a request to help@math.ias.edu.
  • For wireless connections, connect to the IAS wireless network and open a web browser. This should result in your device being directed to a registration page with options to register as a guest with access for two weeks, or to log in with your IAS credentials for permanent access.

[Note: You can also register your devices to work on the Institute's wired and wireless networks by logging into https://updateme.ias.edu and clicking on the Register Devices button under Network Devices. You will be prompted to enter the MAC address of each device that you wish to register on the Institute's wired or wireless network. If you are unsure how to locate this, please visit our How to find your device's Mac Address page.]

There are two wireless networks available for your use at the Institute:

  • IAS - General use network with access to Internet but not to restricted IAS resources such as Electronic Library resources.
  • eduroam - While on-campus at IAS, you will have access to the Internet and restricted IAS resources via this network. Users must install the eduroam certificate before they are able to use this network. Please visit the IAS Wireless Guide for additional information and instruction.

If you travel to another institution that offers an eduroam wireless network to use while you are in-residence at the Institute, you will be able to use your IAS credentials join that institution's eduroam wireless network. For example, you can go to Princeton University and log onto their eduroam wireless network, which will give you unlimited time on their wireless network. For a list of eduroam participants around the globe, please visit https://www.eduroam.org/where/

2. Change your IAS password.

Your IAS user account gives you access to a wealth of internally restricted network resources and services. By accepting your IAS user account credentials, you are bound by the Institute's Computer Use Policy for those credentials. Please take the appropriate steps to protect your IAS credentials at all times (e.g. do not share your credentials with others, do not write your password on a piece of paper and tape it to your monitor or slide it under your keyboard, etc.). Be cautious when using computer systems or wireless networks in public places. Never use the "save password" option on computer systems you are not the sole user on. Keep your own computer systems and mobile devices up to date on operating system patches and anti-virus software/definitions.

If you are interested in changing your IAS password, please review our Password Policy and Resetting Your Password Through ADSelfService Plus pages.

3. Configure your preferred email client to access your IAS mailbox or use IAS Webmail.

Our Email page contains information on connecting to IAS Webmail, configuring various email clients, forwarding your IAS email to another address and much more!

4. Install a network printer on your desktop or laptop computer.

You can print to any of our black and white or color public network printers from your personal desktop or laptop computer or mobile device from your IAS office or apartment in the housing complex. Please visit our Printing page for additional information.

5. Access your IAS home directory.

Network storage space is provided for all School of Math Faculty, Visiting Scholars, and Staff. All users are encouraged to use this storage space for saving their data as it is backed up on a regular basis.

6. Gain access to IAS resources from your personal laptop while away from IAS.

If you plan to travel away from campus with your laptop during your time at the Institute, you can gain access to your user data and most IAS network resources using OpenVPN and ssh. With an OpenVPN connection, you can access restricted network resources as if you were on campus.

If you have any questions about completing any of the tasks mentioned above, please contact the School of Math Help Desk at help@math.ias.edu.
