In Ernst Kantorowicz: A Life, the distinguished medieval historian Robert E. Lerner, Member in the School of Historical Studies (1988–1989), presents a richly illuminating study of the German-Jewish scholar and Professor in the School of Historical Studies (1951–63) he calls “perhaps the most influential” medieval historian of all time. In his biography, "[Lerner] also offers a timely meditation on the vicissitudes of abstract, purist ideals under the pressure of savage real-world events," writes George Prochnik in the New York Times.
