Academic Trustee Ewine van Dishoeck has been recognized with the 2018 Kavli Prize in Astrophysics for her contributions to observational, theoretical, and laboratory astrochemistry.

The Institute for Advanced Study has appointed Dutch astronomer and chemist Ewine van Dishoeck to its Board of Trustees, effective May 5, 2018.

On May 3, 2018, Veena Das, Academic Trustee for the Institute's School of Social Science, will deliver a talk titled "Meaning and Metaphor: How to Receive Thoughts from an Elsewhere," which will center on the ways in which the social sciences in general and anthropology in particular can find a way to be open to other intellectual traditions.

The Institute for Advanced Study has appointed Mark Heising to its Board of Trustees, effective October 28, 2017. Heising is founder and managing director of Medley Partners, a California-based investment firm. He holds six U.S. Patents in cryptography, compression, and data communications.

The Institute for Advanced Study has appointed Manjul Bhargava and Christopher A. Cole to its Board of Trustees. These appointments were effective May 6, 2017. Bhargava is a leading scholar in number theory with interests in combinatorics and representation theory. Cole is the founder and Chairman of Ardea Partners, an independent investment banking advisory firm based in New York, London, and Princeton.

The Institute welcomes Jeanette Lerman-Neubauer, Founder and President of J.P. Lerman & Co., to the Board of Trustees. She was elected on October 29, 2016.

Veena Das, Krieger-Eisenhower Professor of Anthropology at Johns Hopkins University, and Lorraine Daston, Director at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, have joined the IAS Board of Trustees, effective May 7, 2016.

“I didn’t think it was math, just something fun to do,” says Jim Simons, IAS Trustee and Member (1972) in the School of Mathematics. An only child, he was contemplative by nature and enjoyed pondering mathematical ideas. “I think there’s a quality of just being able to get lost in thought that is pretty good for math,” he says.
