Abstract: Recently infinite dimensional Lie algebras have been identified in the study of physical models. Some examples are the Monster Lie algebra in a certain compactification of the Heterotic String and hyperbolic Kac-Moody Lie algebras in dimensionally reduced supergravity theories. Since these algebras encode physical symmetries, it is important to associate Lie group analogs to them. However many of the usual techniques break down in infinite dimensions. We will discuss some of the issues that arise and outline some constructions that could be used to study the physical models.
