- In connection with the discussion of chiral symmetry breaking on page 92, Yu. Kalashnikova, A. Nefediev, and E. Ribeiro have pointed out four recent papers that show how an effective Lorentz scalar potential can arise from a fundamental Lorentz vector force. The references are: N. Brambilla and A. Vairo, Phys. Lett. B407 (1997) 167; Yu. S. Kalashnikova and A. V. Nefediev, Phys. Lett. B414 (1997) 149; Yu. S. Kalashnikova, A. V. Nefediev, and J. E. F. T. Ribeiro, Phys. Rev. D72 (2005) 034020; A. V. Nefediev and Yu. A. Simonov, JETP Lett. 82 (2005) 557.
- In discussing reprint R9 on page 16 of the Commentaries, I briefly mentioned that this paper included a pion-pion sum rule. In 1965 there was insufficient data to check this sum rule, but recent data allows a precise evaluation, and confirms that a large S0 wave contribution is needed for saturation: see S. L. Adler and F. J. Yndurain, arXiv: 0704.1201 [hep-ph]. This paper also includes a detailed discussion of pion off shell extrapolation corrections, for both the pion-pion and pion-nucleon sum rules.
- In connection with this work, Paco Yndurain prompted me to search for references on two-pion production in pion nucleon scattering, which allow me to update my discussion of the work of Nambu, Lurie, and Shrauner that applied the Nambu-Lurie pion bremsstrahlung formula to inelastic pion production. In the final section of Shrauner's 1963 paper, he suggests that the pion peripheral diagram, in which a pion is emitted from the nucleon line and undergoes pion-pion scattering with the incident pion, may be important; this point was also made by S. Weinberg in his 1966-1967 Phys. Rev. Lett. articles on pion scattering lengths and effective Lagrangians. Subsequent developments have borne this out: see the papers M. G. Olsson and L. Turner, Phys. Rev. Lett. 20, 1127 (1968) and Phys. Rev. 181, 2141 (1969), which show that near inelastic threshold, a chiral effective Lagrangian calculation including the peripheral diagram along with pion bremsstrahlung from the external nucleon lines gives a satisfactory fit to experiment. For relatively recent reviews with full theoretical and experimental references, see D. Pocanic, arXiv:hep-ph/ 9809455, and the article by Pocanic in A. M Bernstein and B. R. Holstein, eds. ``Chiral Dynamics: Theory and Experiment'', Springer Lecture Notes in Physics no. 452 (1995).
