WHAT YOU SHOULD PACK:


Packing Hints
We strongly suggest you pack the following clothing and other critical items that would be difficult or expensive to purchase locally:
  • *a cell phone (with international calling plan activated, as needed) - there will not be phone service available in the apartment.
  • *a cell phone charger
  • *for participants coming from outside of the United States, a power converter and plug adapter that is compatible with the United States' electrical system
  • *a pair of sneakers or comfortable walking shoes
  • *an umbrella (we often have thunderstorms in July)
  • *a sweater/light jacket (the temperature in the lecture hall may be cooler than you prefer)
  • *a swimsuit (we will have a pool party one evening, weather permitting)
  • *a flashlight (the area streets are not well lit when walking after dark)
  • *an alarm clock
  • *a hairdryer

The Institute will provide you with a pillow and bed and bath linens.
The dress code is informal during the Program.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN YOU ARRIVE:

Housing Check-In on Sunday, July 14 - Institute Apartments
Participants housed on the Institute Campus may arrive on campus at anytime that is convenient for you on Sunday, July 14. You may pick up your apartment key and a Welcome Packet from the Public Safety Officer at the Reception Desk in Fuld Hall (the main building on campus, with the clock tower). The Reception Desk is on your right as you enter the front doors of Fuld Hall. If the Officer is not at Reception (behind the glass window) when you arrive, please use the phone on the desk in the lobby and dial 5460. If you reach voicemail, please leave a message and the Officer will come to Fuld Hall to assist you, generally within 20 minutes of your call. Please give the Officer your name, tell him that you are a participant in the PiTP Program staying in an Institute Apartment, and he will give you your key and packet. IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT YOUR WELCOME PACKET:
  • *The Welcome Packet will contain meal tickets for breakfast, lunch and dinner in the Institute Dining Hall on Monday, July 15. You can pick up your meal tickets for the remaining weekdays of the program when you come to the Institute Dining Hall on Monday, July 15 for dinner (dinner will be served 5:30 - 6:30 p.m.).
  • *The contents of your Welcome Packet will contain critical information you should be certain to read prior to the start of the Program on Monday morning.

PLEASE NOTE: SMOKING IS NOT PERMITTED IN INSTITUTE APARTMENTS, AND YOU MAY NOT BRING PETS OR INVITE OVERNIGHT GUESTS TO STAY WITH YOU IN YOUR APARTMENT. IN ADDITION, YOU WILL BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES TO YOUR APARTMENT THAT MAY OCCUR DURING YOUR STAY.

Housing Payment Instructions - Institute Apartment
Participants staying in an Institute Apartment should plan to pay for their housing on or before Wednesday, July 17. You should bring payment to the Program Business Office on the Institute campus (located on the first floor of Bloomberg Hall, room BH-186) between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on the first Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday of the program (July 15-17). Payment must be in the form of cash or a check made payable to the Institute for Advanced Study. Payment must be in U.S. Dollars and no credit or debit cards can be accepted. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW REGARDING STAYING IN INSTITUTE APARTMENTS:

General Information & Who to Contact If Problems - Institute Apartments

Institute apartments are self-housekeeping, air-conditioned, have full baths and a full kitchen. There are no televisions in the apartments. If you encounter any problems with your apartment, please call the housing office (extension 8230, or +1-609-734-8230 from a cell phone). If calling in the evenings or on the weekend, please leave a voicemail and you can expect your concern to be addressed on the following business day. For an electrical, plumbing, heating or mechanical emergency that occurs in the evening or over the weekend, please call the Public Safety Officer on duty by dialing extension 5460 (+1-609-947-5940 from a cell phone - NOTE: the last 4 digits of the number are different when calling from a cell phone).

If you wish to exchange your used linens or towels for a clean set, or if you need additional cleaning supplies, paper towels, toilet tissue or kleenex for your apartment, please go to the housing office in the Activities Center any weekday from 8:00-9:00 a.m. or from 4:00-5:00 p.m. (the location of the Activities Center is noted on the Institute Housing Map in the Maps section under the heading "What All Participants Need To Know" below).

Internet Access - Institute Apartments

You will have free internet access while in your apartment and on campus. Each apartment has two activated Ethernet jacks which are directly connected to the IAS computer network. The jack labeled D2A is reserved for IAS equipment which provides our wireless network. Please do not tamper with this equipment. Removal of the equipment from D2A will deactivate the jack and degrade the wireless network in your apartment as well as the surrounding apartments. All other Ethernet jacks in the apartments are available to residents. As on our wireless network, registered wired devices will have access to the Internet and designated campus resources.

Laundry - Institute Apartments
There is a self-service laundry facility in the Activities Center located on Morse Lane in the Institute Housing Complex (see the center section of the Institute Housing Map). To use the machines, you must first purchase a laundry card from the Reception Office in Fuld Hall (open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). The cards cost $10.00 USD, which includes a $3.00 deposit and $7.00 for laundry services. Cards must be returned to the Reception Office before 4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 26th, at which time you will receive your $3.00 deposit back, plus a refund of any money remaining on the card from the original $7.00 laundry credit. Small boxes of laundry detergent can be purchased from a vending machine in the Activities Center, or you may buy it at the Princeton University Store (see "Where to Buy" section below). Your Institute Identification Card will unlock the door of the Laundry Room (see "Institute Identification Cards" section under the "What All Participants Need To Know" heading below for more information.) You will find free parking available near your apartment, as well as in Lot A on Campus (next to Bloomberg Hall). Telephone Use - Institute Apartments
PARTICIPANTS SHOULD BRING A CELL PHONE, WITH AN ACTIVATED INTERNATIONAL CALLING PLAN AS NEEDED. The phone in your apartment will allow you to make only internal on-campus calls, or to dial the local Emergency number (dial 9-911; for details, see the "Emergency Information" section under the "What All Participants Need To Know" heading below). Where to Buy...food, laundry detergent, toiletries, paper, pens, etc.
There are two stores located near the Princeton train station (a 15-minute walk from the Institute campus) where you can buy basic items you might need. The first is the Princeton University Store and the second is the WaWa Convenience Store. The University Store is located at 36 University Place (Telephone: +1-609-921-8500 extension 100). It is just up the street from the Princeton Train Station, and it is open Monday - Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. It sells pens, papers, basic toiletries, laundry detergent, makeup, some over the counter medicines, snacks and drinks. The WaWa Store is located at the corner of University Place and Alexander Road (Telephone: +1-609-921-3677) next to the Princeton Train Station, and it is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It sells sandwiches/side items (hot and cold), a limited variety of fruits, drinks and snacks. There is an Automated Teller Machine at the WaWa, as well. The location of the Princeton University Store and the WaWa Store are marked on the Master PiTP Map found in the "Maps" section below. WHAT ALL PARTICIPANTS NEED TO KNOW: Business Office & Staff
The office for the PiTP Program is located on the Institute campus on the first floor of Bloomberg Hall (BH-186). There will be signs posted in the building to direct you, and the office staff may be reached from any campus or IAS apartment phone by dialing extension 8198 (or +1-609-734-8198 from a cell phone). Please call or come to see us if you have any questions or concerns during your stay. Personal and traveler's checks, up to $200, may be cashed at the Institute Reception Office in Fuld Hall any weekday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. If you need access to an Automated Teller Machine, there is one in the basement of Fuld Hall, but PLEASE NOTE: you should plan to use this machine only for small withdrawals for unexpected expenses during your stay; it will NOT be able to support large cash withdrawals for housing charges, for example. In addition, it will only allow withdrawals if your financial institution is a member of one of the participating networks listed on the front of the machine, and please be aware that your bank may charge additional fees for this service, including currency conversion fees, where applicable. There also is an Automated Teller Machine at the WaWa convenience store next to the Princeton train station. The location of the Train Station is marked on the Master PiTP Map found in the "Maps" section below. Common Rooms on the Institute Campus
The Fuld Hall Common Room is open to PiTP participants 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is an excellent selection of domestic and foreign newspapers and periodicals in this room; you are welcome to enjoy these publications, but please note that many of them are marked with a request that they NOT be removed from the Common Room. PiTP participants also are allowed to use the Bloomberg Hall Common Room 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but you will need to use your Institute Access/Identification Card to enter this building in the evenings or on the weekends. Please note that the kitchen area of Bloomberg Hall Common Room is NOT open to PiTP participants; it is reserved for use by Institute Members and Faculty only. Computing Use while on the Institute Campus
Participants are expected to bring their own laptop to the program. Students coming from outside of the United States should be sure to bring a power converter and plug adapter that is compatible with the United States' electrical system, so that you are able to re-charge your laptop battery. Use of your laptop (or other personal computing device) on the Institute network requires completion of a small registration procedure. Details will be provided in your Welcome Packet, which will be given to you upon your arrival. If you have any trouble with connecting your laptop to the network, our computing staff will be available weekdays between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to help you. You may call them from a campus phone at extension 8030 (or +1-609-734-8030 from a cell phone) or email them at help@sns.ias.edu. (PLEASE NOTE: The Institute computing staff will not be able to assist with any questions related to internet access while in Forbes Dorm on the Princeton University Campus). The Institute campus, excluding the lecture hall (Wolfensohn Hall), offers wireless service, and there are a limited number of data ports located in the Bloomberg Hall Common Room for your use. There also will be a few desktop computers set up in the Physics Library on the 2nd floor of Bloomberg Hall for use by participants unable to bring a laptop with them, or by those who experience problems with their laptop once they have arrived. Wolfensohn Hall (main lobby) Activities Building in Housing (lounge area) Institute Public Safety Officer: An Institute Public Safety Officer is on duty each weeknight and all weekend long. They may be reached by dialing extension 5460 from any campus or IAS apartment phone (dial +1-609-947-5940 if calling from a cell phone). * If you dial 911 in error, please do not hang up. Wait for the emergency dispatcher to come on the line and explain that it was a misdial. If you hang up before speaking with the dispatcher, Princeton Emergency Services will be obligated to send a police car to your location to investigate the call. Fax and Mail Service
There is a fax machine in the Reception Office on the first floor of Fuld Hall. The incoming fax number is +1-609-924-8399. If you are expecting to receive a fax during your stay, please make sure that it is addressed to you "in care of: Susan Higgins," and please note that faxes received in the evening or over the weekend will not be able to be given to you until the following business day. The Receptionist also is available to send faxes out for you weekdays between 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. A fax cover page must accompany all requests for fax transmittals; a supply of the cover pages may be found at the Reception desk. There is a charge for outgoing faxes. U.S. and overseas postage stamps may be purchased at the Reception Office in Fuld Hall. There is a Mail Information Center in the hallway of the lower level of Fuld Hall, (this wing of Fuld is also referred to as Building B, see #3 on the Campus Map under the "Maps" section below), where you will find a postage scale for weighing letters and small parcels. Airbills, envelopes, and information for express mail services are located in this area, as well. There is outgoing mail collection from the Common Room in Bloomberg Hall several times a day - you can place stamped mail in the "outgoing" slot in the counter below the wall of mail boxes. If you are expecting to receive mail during your stay, please make sure that it is addressed to you "in care of: Susan Higgins, Institute for Advanced Study, Einstein Drive, Princeton, NJ 08540." Institute Identification Cards
Each participant will receive an Institute Identification Card and a Name Badge, both of which should be kept with you at all times. The Identification Card will be given to you on Monday, July 15. It identifies you as being part of the program and will allow you access into buildings in the evenings and over the weekend. The card will give you access to Bloomberg Hall, the Mathematics-Natural Sciences Library in Fuld Hall, the Laundry Room (in the Activities Center in the Housing Complex) and the Tennis Courts. To use the card, place it face down in the card reader outside the entrance of each building or room. In some instances you may need to use the card to exit areas, as well. ID cards will automatically be deactivated at the end of the program, so you may take them home as a program souvenir. Library Resources
The holdings of the Mathematics-Natural Sciences library are presently in three locations - on the second floor of Fuld Hall and in the Astrophysics and Physics libraries on the second floor of Bloomberg Hall. Your Institute Access/Identification Card will allow you 24-hour access to the various locations. Please check the online catalog of the Mathematics-Natural Sciences library for holdings and location of books and journals. Electronic resources at Princeton University are accessible via the link on the homepage of the Mathematics-Natural Sciences library. Books and bound periodicals may be taken to an office on campus but must remain on Institute premises. To borrow a book, please sign both cards found in the back of the volume, indicate "PiTP2013" next to your name, and leave the cards in the tray provided. NON-CRITICAL CARE: If you fall ill or experience a minor injury on a weekday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., and you decide you do not need immediate emergency care, you may consult with the Human Resources Staff in Fuld Hall (office #102; dial extension 8243 or 8245 from any campus phone or +1-609-8243 or 8245 from a cell phone), who will be able to explain the medical treatment options available through the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro Occupational Health office. PLEASE NOTE: The Medical Center's appointment hours end at 3:00 p.m., so you may not be able to be scheduled for an appointment until the next business day. PLEASE ALSO NOTE: The University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro Occupational Health office does not deal with any insurance companies, so you are advised to bring a credit card with you, as you will be responsible for payment at the time of services. They will issue a receipt which you can submit to your insurance company if your plan is such that it will reimburse for out-of-network providers. Please see http://www.ias.edu/campus/hr/announce#UrgentCare for further information and a schedule of fees negotiated by the Institute. If it is a weekday in the late afternoon/evening or on a weekend, you may wait to consult Human Resources on the next weekday morning, or if you feel the need is urgent, you have several options: #1 Princeton Primary and Urgent Care Center in Princeton Junction is open Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to Noon. They are located at 707 Alexander Road and they can be reached by calling +1-609-919-0009. Further information about this practice and the insurances they accept may be found on their website. Walk-ins are welcome, but it is recommended you call them before you go. The Center is about a 10-minute car ride away. See the "Taxis" section below for taxi company phone numbers. PLEASE NOTE: In case they are not able to bill your private insurance plan directly, or do not accept your insurance, you should bring a credit card with you so you can pay at the time of service. #2 Saint Peter’s Urgent Care Center in Skillman (North of Princeton at 1378 Route 206, in the Village Shoppes at Montgomery) is open from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. They can be reached by calling +1-609-497-4597. No appointments are necessary, but it is recommended you call them before you go. Further information about this practice, directions, and the insurances they accept may be found on their website. The Center is about a 15-minute car ride away. See the "Taxis" section below for taxi company phone numbers. PLEASE NOTE: In case they are not able to bill your private insurance plan directly, or do not accept your insurance, you should bring a credit card with you so you can pay at the time of service. #3 Minute Clinic at CVS Pharmacy Princeton State Highway 206 [located inside CVS/pharmacy #5871 at 881 State Highway 206, Princeton (+1-609-683-3680); THIS IS NOT THE CVS ON NASSAU STREET IN THE CENTER OF PRINCETON] Clinic hours are Monday - Friday, 8:30 am to 7:30 pm, Saturday 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, and Sunday 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. Minute Clinic is a walk-in medical clinic staffed by nurse practitioners and physician assistants who provide treatment for common family illnesses and injuries. Patients are responsible for either their insurance co-pay or the price listed on the Minute Clinic menu. If you have insurance, please contact your insurance company before your visit to verify coverage, or if you are uninsured or prefer to pay out-of-pocket, please be certain to bring sufficient cash or a credit card with you. PLEASE NOTE: the last patient sign-in at the registration kiosk is 15 minutes prior to the clinic closing, and the clinic will stop accepting new sign-ins earlier if the number of patients registered and waiting to be seen extends beyond the clinic closing time. Please also note that practitioners take a daily required lunch break from approximately 2:00 to 3:00 pm weekdays and 1:00 to 1:30 pm on Saturday and Sunday. More information on services and fees can be found on their website. The Minute Clinic at CVS Pharmacy Princeton is about a 10-minute car ride away. See the "Taxis" section below for taxi company phone numbers. # 4 The closest Hospital Emergency Room is located at the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro's Center for Emergency Care They are located at One Plainsboro Road in Plainsboro, and they can be reached by calling +1-609-853-7700. PLEASE NOTE: an Emergency Room visit can be very expensive, and any costs incurred will be the responsibility of the participant or his/her insurance company. You should bring with you your medical insurance card and information, as well as a credit card, if you decide to visit the Emergency Room. AVOIDING LYME DISEASE: Exposure to deer ticks can be a serious problem, as they may carry Lyme disease. It is helpful to avoid sitting in grassy areas or walking around without shoes. Lyme disease typically is first noticeable as a bulls-eye rash. If you feel feverish, sore, or have general flu symptoms, check yourself for any signs of this rash. As Lyme disease can be present even without a visible rash, however, if you have flu-like symptoms, you may wish to consult a physician. LOCAL PHARMACIES: The Princeton Pharmacy is located on the first floor of the University Store, just up the street from the Princeton Train Station (36 University Place, +1-609-924-4545). Its hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Princeton Pharmacy is not open on Sundays. There also is a CVS Pharmacy in downtown Princeton (172 Nassau Street, at the corner of Washington Road, +1-609-683-1337); the store is open 7 days a week from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., however the pharmacy section opens at 8:00 a.m. on Monday - Friday and has reduced hours on the weekends - it is open Saturdays 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Sundays 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Messages and Notices A PiTP bulletin board will be located in Bloomberg Hall Common Room, and messages to participants, notices about special activities, etc. will be posted there. Please be certain to check the bulletin board a few times every day. Program schedule changes or other important announcements also will be posted on our web site's Schedule page. Parking at the Institute Participants will find free parking in Lot A on Campus (which is located next to Bloomberg Hall, and near the lecture hall, Wolfensohn Hall.) No parking sticker is required. Photocopy Machines Although we do not encourage participants to plan to use Institute copiers while they are here, if you need to make copies of critical documents during your stay, please come to the Program Business Office in Bloomberg Hall (open weekdays 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.). Recreational/Athletic/Social Activities Director's Dinner: Dr. Robbert Dijkgraaf, Director of the Institute, will host a Director's Dinner in the Dining Hall at 5:30 p.m. on the evening of Tuesday, July 16. Pizza & Pool Party: We will be holding a Pizza and Pool Party at Olden Farm on the Institute campus (97 Olden Lane), from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. on the evening of Tuesday, July 23 (for the location of Olden Farm, see building #15 on the Campus Map found under "Maps" above). Athletic/Recreational Activities: The Institute's tennis courts will be available to Program participants (you must bring your own racquets and tennis balls). The tennis courts are located off Goldman Lane (see the lower right corner of the Institute Campus Map under the "Maps" section above). You will need to use your Access/Identification Card to gain entrance to the courts. We also will have a limited number of frisbees, soccer balls, basketballs and volleyballs in the Program Office which we will lend out to individuals who wish to organize informal frisbee, soccer, basketball or volleyball games with their fellow PiTP participants. The Institute has a soccer field located on the path that runs from Olden Lane to Parking Lot A (see the Institute Campus Map under the "Maps" section above), and there is a basketball court and volleyball courts located off Goldman Lane near the tennis courts (see the lower right corner of the Institute Campus Map under the "Maps" section above). The Institute woods provide many paths for those who wish to take a walk or a run during their free time, as well (see Institute Woods Map under the "Maps" section above). Schedule of Program Events You will receive a copy of the program schedule in your Welcome Packet. It also is posted on our web site (see Schedule). All lectures will be given in Wolfensohn Hall unless otherwise noted. Any unexpected and last minute changes to the schedule will be posted on the web site and a flyer placed on the bulletin board in Bloomberg Hall. There will be a sale of Institute souvenir apparel and other merchandise during lunch break on Friday, July 19th. Items can be purchased only with cash or a check (U.S. Dollars), and will be available only at this time. There will be no program activities scheduled for the evening of Friday, July 19th through the evening of Sunday, July 21st. Suggested Weekend Activities There are no scheduled program activities over the weekend of July 20-21; participants are free to make their own plans for these two days. Information about selected activities occurring in the Princeton area over that weekend will be posted under a link on our web site's Schedule page. We also will post details on our bulletin board in Bloomberg Hall.
