Totally geodesic surfaces in hyperbolic 3-manifolds
Although the existence of a totally geodesic surface in a finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold is "rare", when they do exist, their presence seems to have an impact on the geometry and topology of the hyperbolic 3-manifold, as well as number theoretic properties of its fundamental group. This talk will discuss some of these features.
