Mathematical Conversations

The classification of finite simple groups is a singular event in the history of mathematics. It has one of the longest and most complicated proofs any theorem (indeed just to define the terms in the statement of theorem requires a lot). It has many consequences in various parts of mathematics. I will briefly touch on aspects of its history and perhaps the philosophy of having such a complicated proof. If time permits, I will mention one or two consequences in other areas.
