Fair Duels, Digital Halftoning, and Other Mathematical Bit-Balancing Acts
What are some of the ways in which binary-valued functions can accurately approximate continuous-valued ones? This talk will be a gentle exposition of the mathematics of "noise-shaping quantization" presented through motivating applications. We will take the perspective of discrepancy theory and approximation theory, but also describe the fundamental connections to harmonic analysis, dynamical systems, and number theory.
