Causality, Holography, and Entanglement Entropy
The covariant holographic entanglement entropy formula expresses the entropy of a given region in terms of the area of a certain spacelike surface in the bulk. In holographic models of thermalization involving gravitational collapse, it has been observed that this extremal surface probes the region behind the event horizon. This leads to the question of whether the formula respects causal relations in the bulk and on the boundary. I will show that it "just barely" does, which serves as a non-trivial check on the formula. It also implies a natural association between boundary and bulk causal regions.
